You could try to just use a basket hanging from a pulley and get rid of the whole elevator housing to reduce friction.
The marble could get dumped out of the basket when it hits a peg or something... That way you leave the decision of where the marble(s) leave the elevator to the visitor.
We just talked about the importance to have "open-ended" elements that visitors can integrate in their construction and complete in different ways. Perhaps the elevator has potential for that.
Are you thinking about including a slow moving motor to raise the marble? It's an interesting way to make it go down; but it's easy to make things go do. More difficult to lift marbles up.
